In 1737 this panel by Pontormo was pierced so that it could be fitted into a tabernacle with a crucifix, and only the restoration carried out for the exhibition in Rome has given it back its original appearance. It comes printed on handmade Amalfi paper, in a handmade frame.

Pontormo painted it around 1519 for the church of San Michele Arcangelo in Pontorme, near Empoli, together with the Saint Michael that is its companion. The two panels remained in that church for five centuries.
For the exhibition at the Scuderie del Quirinale in Rome both were restored with the support of Friends of Florence, a foundation that funds the restoration of Florentine art, in a 160,000-dollar project. Now the two saints are on display together, courtesy of the Archdiocese of Florence.
