The artwork
Original and rare 18th-century view of San Giacomo di Rialto, painted by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground there is the church of San Giacomo, with its colonnade, central sundial, and three bells above. In front of the churchyard there is a small square with scenes of daily life. On the right side of the painting there is a large palace in the shadow of a setting sun. The sky is threatening, and very dark clouds loom in the upper left.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1725. Another variant of this work by Canaletto exists.
