The artwork
An original and rare 18th-century view of the small island of San Cristoforo, seen from a jetty on another island, by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground is a flight of steps on which two onlookers are admiring the landscape. Further back, towards the right, is the island of San Cristoforo. The water is painted in shades of light green, light brown and blue, echoing the tones of a cloudy sky.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1722. Two other versions of this work exist.
