A drawing Pontormo made to prepare this Holy Family has stayed in Florence, at the Uffizi, while the painted panel travelled all the way to St Petersburg, to the Hermitage Museum. It comes printed on handmade Amalfi paper, in a handmade frame.

Pontormo painted it around 1522-1523, the same years as the Adoration of the Magi in Palazzo Pitti, which you will also find in our shop. Saint Joseph emerges from the shadows on the left with his staff, and on the right the young Baptist holds his slender cross.
At the centre the Madonna holds the Child close. In her mantle a petrol green sits beside a red of almost saturated intensity.
The panel reached the Hermitage with the collection of Countess E. I. Mordvinova.
