S. Giovanni in Laterano from Prospectus Locurum Urbis Romae Insignium, 1666 - Lievin Cruyl

The artwork

Original historical view of the Lateran district in Rome in 1700, made by Lievin Cruyl. The basilica is seen from the front at a distance, while working-class tenements facing the square with the obelisk stand out. Beside the Lateran church is a large rectangular palace. There are townspeople in the square, and the details are softly blurred. The tenements are depicted outside the walls. There is a similar view of this painting with a colour variation.
