Giovanni Fattori leaves behind the stillness of his patrol scenes to focus on pure dynamism and muscular power. The mounted Carabiniere is rendered through a concise, vibrant brushstroke, with the watercolour softening the outlines and conveying the sense of speed and the impetus of movement. The soldier seems almost fused with the animal in a single block of energy crossing the space diagonally, while the barely sketched background heightens the speed of the passage and the tension of the moment. Fattori’s mastery here lies in his ability to evoke a complex, frenzied scene with very few essential strokes, preserving the emotional and formal truth that characterises all his mature work devoted to military life.
