Giovanni Fattori abandons the static nature of patrol views to focus on pure dynamism and muscular strength. The mounted carabinieri is rendered through a synthetic and vibrant brushstroke, where watercolor allows the blurring of contours and conveys a sense of speed and the impetus of movement. The figure of the soldier appears almost merged with the animal in a single block of energy that diagonally crosses the space, while the barely hinted background enhances the swiftness of the passage and the tension of the moment. Fattori's mastery here lies in his ability to evoke a complex and agitated scene with very few essential strokes, maintaining the emotional and formal truth that characterizes his entire mature production dedicated to military life themes.
