The artwork
A luminous and rare view of the tomb of Cecilia Metella in Rome in 1750, painted by Bernardo Bellotto. In the foreground there are the remains of the tomb, with a particular focus on the shrubs that have grown on the walls above, a sign of neglect and oblivion. In the background and to the side there are other elegant tombs, more carefully maintained than that of Cecilia Metella, which nevertheless struggles to withstand the passage of time, its arches still intact. The sky is clear with a few scattered clouds.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated between 1750 and 1775 and is exhibited at the Shipley Art Gallery, Gateshead, Tyne & Wear, UK. Another variant of this work exists.
