A marvellous pen-and-ink painting by Gaspare Vanvitelli depicting an ancient amphitheatre, worn by time and in ruins. For this work Vanvitelli may have drawn inspiration from a section of the Colosseum. The dark greys of the painted vaults are emphasised, and the details of the stonework are picked out in the finest brown. The details inside the vaults are softly blurred.
