Roman soldiers were the beating heart of the expansion and defence of the Roman Empire. Trained with iron discipline and organised into structured units such as legions and cohorts, they were one of the most efficient military forces in history. Each legionary was equipped with a gladius (short sword), a rectangular shield (scutum), a spear (pilum) and sturdy armour, ready to fight in close formation and to carry out complex tactical manoeuvres on the battlefield.

Besides their martial skills, Roman soldiers were also engineers, builders and administrators. They built roads, fortifications, aqueducts and bridges, contributing to the infrastructure of the Empire. Serving in the army offered prestige, regular pay and, for many non-citizens, the chance to obtain Roman citizenship at the end of their service. The professionalism and adaptability of the soldiers were fundamental to the longevity and might of Rome for over a thousand years.
