Roman soldiers were the most dominant and enduring military force in history, from 753 BC to AD 476, becoming a model of efficiency and discipline. For centuries they defended and extended the borders of Rome, until the decline of the Empire under the pressure of the barbarian invasions, especially in the Germanic lands.
This statue depicts a proud Roman soldier, armed with a broad shield, a mighty sword at his side and a long javelin, ready to join his comrades in battle against the enemy.
