The artwork
The frescoes of the Villa of the Mysteries in Pompeii are a true jewel of ancient Roman art. This is painting of a very high standard which, despite its simplicity, based for instance on the vivid contrast between the red background and the figures, effectively portrays ancient cults, mainly Dionysian ones, or the initiation of young people into these mysteries.
