The artwork
A rare 18th-century depiction of a Roman capriccio, with the Colosseum in the background, created by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground there is an ancient, disused colonnade, with shrubs growing on the upper ridges, and scenes of daily life at its base. Further in the background, we can see the majestic Colosseum, with shrubs on the upper ridges depicting a decadent Rome of the mid-18th century. The sky is clear, with a few white clouds on the horizon.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1742. There is another variant of this work created by Canaletto.
