The artwork
A clear and vivid 18th-century view of a Roman capriccio with an arched gateway, painted by Bernardo Bellotto. The archway, with its Romanesque arch and the sculpture of a sphinx protruding from the top, stands out. The arch is a gateway to a suburb of Rome. Inside, scenes of daily life are depicted, with travelers preparing to enter the city. In the background there are splendid mountains, with a cloudless sky.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is undated and is exhibited at the Galleria Nazionale, Palazzo della Pilotta, in Parma.
