The artwork
Romantic and rare view of a capriccio depicting the entrance to the Capitoline Hill in Rome, painted by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. The double archway at the entrance is particularly striking, with beggars at the foot of the columns. On the steps citizens are strolling, including one on horseback entering the gate. At the bottom of the steps there is a large equestrian statue, and beyond it, the Capitoline Hill.
The sky is clear, but there are some clouds on the horizon. Mountains are painted in the background. The painting is dated circa 1742. Another version of this work exists, using different colors.
