The artwork
Giovanni Paolo Pannini’s Roman Capriccio, created in the eighteenth century, is an emblematic work of the eighteenth-century tradition of idealized views. The artist, a master of perspective and architectural scenography, composes an imaginary landscape in which famous monuments of ancient Rome are gathered together, deliberately arranged in an anachronistic manner.
Triumphal arches, columns, temples, and ruins engage in dialogue within a harmonious construction that exalts the glory of the imperial past. Among these vestiges move small figures of travelers, artists, and common people, who enliven the scene and emphasize its narrative dimension. The painting is a meditation on the timeless fascination of Rome, interpreted with both erudition and theatrical sensibility.
