The artwork
Original and rare 18th-century view of the Riva degli Schiavoni, with a detail of some of the buildings opposite, painted by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground there is the Riva degli Schiavoni quay, bustling with people and used as a landing stage for smaller boats, including gondolas. Many boats of various sizes are navigating the Grand Canal. The bell tower of St. Mark's Square is further in the background. The sky is slightly cloudy, tinged with light blue and light pink clouds.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1724. Canaletto created other variations of this work.
