The artwork
The Medici inventory gave him a name, that of the musician Francesco dell'Ajolle, but in 1959 the scholar Keutner took it away, and ever since this young man with music under his hand has had no certain identity. It comes printed on handmade Amalfi paper, in a handmade frame.
- A young man dressed in black, wearing a cap, with an open sheet of music under his hand.
- Dark, sober tones, elegant in a study or a library.
- A gift for anyone who makes music, for love or for a living.
Pontormo painted it around 1518-1519, a date based on its style; these are the years of the Pucci Altarpiece, which you will also find in our shop.
The portrait was once given to Andrea del Sarto, Pontormo's master. It was Carlo Gamba who restored it to the pupil, and today the attribution is accepted by all scholars.
The painting belonged to Cardinal Leopoldo de' Medici, and today it is in the Uffizi, Florence.
Beside a piano or above a desk, it keeps company with those who study and those who play. A lovely gift for a choir director or for someone who has just graduated from music school.
