The artwork
A Florentine boy has been looking his viewers in the eye for almost five hundred years, and he may be the future first Duke of Florence. It comes printed on handmade Amalfi paper, in a handmade frame.
- A young man portrayed with his gaze turned towards the viewer.
- A portrait format for a study, a bookcase, a hallway.
- A gift for anyone who loves Renaissance portraits and Tuscany.
Pontormo painted it around 1525. Who the boy is remains uncertain: one hypothesis is Alessandro de' Medici, who was then about fifteen and a few years later would become the first Duke of Florence.
The portrait is now in Lucca, in the Museo Nazionale di Palazzo Mansi. It arrived there in the nineteenth century with a group of Florentine paintings that Grand Duke Leopold II gave to the city, to make up for the sale of the Bourbon collections.
At the exhibition at the Scuderie del Quirinale in Rome, Finestre sull'Arte described him as the young man who looks you in the eye and at the same time seems to lose substance.
In a study or beside a bookcase, that gaze keeps you company. It is the gift for anyone who loves faces and the stories of the Medici.
