Clara Wagner-Grosch trained as a portraitist at the Grand Ducal School of Painting under Paul Borgmann in Karlsruhe, under Roland Risse and Wilhelm Sohn in Düsseldorf, Karl Gussow in Berlin, and Gustave Courtois (1853-1923) and Girardot in Paris.
She received numerous portrait commissions from the court society of Hesse. In 1900 in Paris she met the landscape painter Jakob Wagner, from the canton of Basel-Landschaft, and in 1902 moved with him to Locarno in the canton of Ticino, Switzerland. She spent much time in Germany and Sweden on portrait commissions. Her pictures also went to England and Russia. She enjoyed exhibition successes in Berlin and Munich.
