Original and rare 18th-century view of the Rio dei Mendicanti by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground, a gondola is illuminated by a distinctive ray of light coming from the right. It is navigating the canal, and the water is painted in shades of light green and blue. The houses along the Rio dei Mendicanti are crumbling, with laundry hanging out to dry. On the left, a church and a Venetian palace can be admired, particularly illuminated. The sky is slightly cloudy.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1723. Another variant of this painting exists.
