The artwork
Original and rare 18th-century view of the Rio dei Mendicanti, with a light detail, painted by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground, a gondola is illuminated by a distinctive ray of light coming from the right, navigating the canal, the water painted in shades of light green and blue. The houses along the Rio dei Mendicanti are depicted as dilapidated, with laundry hanging out to dry. On the left, a church and a Venetian palace can be seen, particularly illuminated. The sky is slightly cloudy.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1724. Two versions of this painting exist. The work is exhibited at the Museo del Settecento di Ca' Rezzonico in Venice.
