An original and rare 18th-century painting of the Rialto Bridge, made by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground is the Grand Canal, busy with boats, while all around are handsome Venetian palaces. Canaletto paints the water of the canal in shades of greenish blue, taking on a colour similar to that of the sky. Further back we can see the covered Rialto Bridge, with its shops, a landmark for Venetians. The sky is clear, shaded in light blue and white with a few white clouds.
The picture, an oil on canvas, is undated. Other variants of this work by Canaletto exist. The work is on display at the Musée du Louvre in Paris.
