The artwork
An original and rare 18th-century painting of the Rialto Bridge, by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground is the Grand Canal, busy with boats, surrounded by fine Venetian palazzi. Canaletto paints the water of the canal in shades of blue-green, taking on a colour similar to that of the sky. Further back we can see the covered Rialto Bridge with its shops, a landmark for Venetians. The sky is clear, shaded in light blue and white with a few white clouds.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is undated. Other versions of this work by Canaletto exist.
