Retiarius gladiators (or retiarii) were one of the most distinctive and fascinating classes of the Roman arena. Unlike other heavily armoured gladiators, the retiarii fought with light equipment: a net, a trident and a dagger. They wore a protective sleeve on the left arm (manica), and sometimes a shoulder guard (galerus). Their speed and agility were essential for evading their opponents' attacks and exploiting openings to strike them from a distance. The retiarius was often matched against slower, heavily armed gladiators, such as the murmillones, creating a spectacular duel based on the contrast between lightness and strength. The net was used to entangle or unbalance the opponent, while the trident made it possible to strike while keeping one's distance. This dynamic made their fights among the most popular with the Roman public, for the unpredictability and theatricality they brought to the arena.
