Retiarian gladiators (or retiarii) were one of the most unique and fascinating classes in the Roman arena. Unlike other heavily armored gladiators, retiarii fought with light equipment: a net, a trident, and a dagger. They wore a protective armband on their left arm (manica), and sometimes a shoulder guard (galerus). Their speed and agility were essential for evading their opponents' attacks and exploiting openings to strike from a distance.

Retiarians were often pitted against slower, more heavily armed gladiators, such as murmilli, creating a spectacular duel based on the contrast between lightness and strength. The net served to trap or unbalance the opponent, while the trident allowed them to strike while maintaining distance. This dynamic made their fights among the most popular among the Roman audiences, for the unpredictability and theatricality they brought to the arena.
