The artwork is a refined portrait of Queen Henrietta Maria created by Anthony van Dyck in 1638. The painter depicts her in profile, in an elegant white silk gown adorned with pearls and lace, enhancing the sheen of the fabrics and the composed regality of King Charles I’s young queen consort. The warm, uniform background focuses attention on the precious surfaces and silhouette, delivering an image of exquisite Baroque distinction.
This portrait originated in the context of official commissions from the Stuart court: in 1638, Charles I asked van Dyck for a series of views of the queen's face to send to the sculptor Bernini in Italy for the creation of a marble bust, following the model of the monarch’s famous "triple portrait." The side image is one of the variations painted for this project, which later remained as precious "portrait types" intended to circulate in copies in royal and aristocratic residences. A female icon of the English monarchy, signed by one of the absolute masters of Flemish Baroque portraiture, ideal for collectors seeking elegance, history, and great pictorial quality in a single image.
