Portrayed in a sumptuous golden satin gown, Henrietta Maria, Queen Consort of Charles I of England, poses in front of a column and heavy drapery, while the royal crown emblazons the table to her left, subtly and elegantly asserting her sovereign rank. The soft light makes the reflections of the fabric and pearls shimmer, enhancing the grace of her hands clasped over her stomach and transforming the portrait into an icon of Baroque sophistication destined for a prestigious European aristocratic collection.
Created in 1638 by the great Flemish master Anthony van Dyck, court painter to the Stuarts, this painting belongs to a series of official portraits of the queen that circulated as diplomatic gifts and representations of English power. The work combines the solemnity of the pose with intense attention to costume details, offering the collector a masterful example of a 17th-century high court portrait.
