Original and luminous eighteenth-century view of the Grand Canal with a regatta underway, painted by Giovanni Antonio Canal. It is the Feast of the Redeemer, and all of Venice is celebrating, crowded, and the Grand Canal is filled with colorful boats. Note the palace with its red drapes on the left side. The sky is clear; in the foreground, in the center of the Grand Canal, the gondolini are racing. The sky is clear, and it's a perfect day for celebration.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated around 1740. Many variations of this painting exist.
