An original and luminous 18th-century view of the Grand Canal during a regatta, by Giovanni Antonio Canal. It is the Feast of the Redeemer, all Venice is celebrating, there are crowds of people, and the Grand Canal is full of colourful boats. Note on the left side the palace hung with red drapes. The sky is clear; in the foreground, in the middle of the Grand Canal, the gondolini race is under way. The sky is clear and the day is ideal for the festivities.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated around 1740. Many variants of this painting exist.
