The artwork
Red Gladioli (1907) belongs to Piet Mondrian's naturalist and Luminist phase, when the artist was exploring the rendering of light and colour through floral subjects. The painting depicts a group of tall red gladioli, captured with great chromatic sensitivity and attention to the organic structure of the flower. The intensely coloured petals stand out strongly in the composition thanks to a bright red that contrasts with the darker, neutral background.
Mondrian goes beyond botanical depiction: in the verticality of the flowers, their linear construction and the rhythm of the forms, one can already glimpse the interest in order and essentiality that would characterise his later abstract research. Red Gladioli is therefore a transitional work, in which the natural beauty of the subject coexists with an early attempt to distil reality into purer formal relationships.
