The artwork
Original and rare 18th-century painting by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto, depicting a reception for foreign ambassadors. In the foreground there is the great hall of the Doge's Palace, where Venice's most illustrious notables gathered to greet the new ambassadors taking office in the Republic. The hall features frescoes and a decorated ceiling. The ladies invited to the reception are recognizable by their elegant dresses. The painting, an oil on canvas, is undated. Other variations of this work by Canaletto exist.
The painting is exhibited at the Walters Art Museum, Baltimore, USA.
