Giambologna's "Rape of the Sabine Women" is a majestic statue located in the Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence. 4.10 meters high, this work represents three figures: a young man lifting a woman above his head, while an elderly man, stuck between the young man's legs, despairs. This composition is also known as the three ages of man.
Giambologna, official sculptor of the Medici family, created this work as a masterpiece of mannerism. A unique feature of the statue is its creation from a single block of marble, with a varied shape and multiple points of view that invite the viewer to observe it from different angles.
In the base of the statue there is a bronze plaque depicting the scene of the abduction, with varied combinations of the figures. The statue, exposed to atmospheric agents and vandalism, has undergone a process of deterioration and has required restoration, with ongoing debates about its museumization due to its vulnerability.
