The artwork
The Raising of Lazarus by Giotto di Bondone, frescoed between 1303 and 1305 in the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua, represents one of the most powerful moments in the cycle dedicated to the life of Christ. The scene shows Jesus, with an authoritative gesture, bringing Lazarus, still wrapped in burial cloths, back to life, while onlookers observe the miracle in astonishment. The sisters Martha and Mary kneel at Christ's feet, expressing faith and wonder. Giotto translates the Gospel story with extraordinary humanity: the figures have weight, volume, and believable psychological reactions.
The use of light and color emphasizes the spiritual tension of the moment, while the balanced composition and spatial depth make the scene lively and dynamic. With this work, Giotto breaks with Byzantine rigidity and inaugurates a new pictorial language capable of expressing faith through emotion and human reality.
