It was painted in Egypt between AD 200 and 230, when the country was a province of Rome, by a painter working in the Fayum region. He used tempera, colours mixed with glue, on a lime wood panel. Like the other portraits we call Fayum portraits, it was meant to be placed over the face of the mummy, among the bandages.
The painter drew everything with clean lines and light colours: the crown of flowers in the black hair, the necklace, the white tunic, the hand holding the cup in front of the chest and the other gripping a garland with its ribbons. All around, a painted border closes the portrait like a picture. Today the panel is in the Brooklyn Museum in New York.
In a bedroom or a dining room it brings home a boy of Roman Egypt in festive mood. It is a cheerful and original gift.
