The artwork

Girl with a Comb in her Hair is a painting by Kazimir Malevich datable to around 1913, during the artist’s intense cubo-futurist phase. The female subject, drawn from the everyday world, is transformed through a radical geometric breakdown: the girl’s face and body are reduced to angular planes of colour, dynamic lines and intersecting volumes. Though it starts from a real reference, the work breaks every link with naturalistic representation.

The presence of the comb, a simple domestic detail, becomes a symbolic element underlining the modernity and dignity of the female figure in an era of profound social change. The bright colours and strong compositional tension anticipate the Suprematist research that would shortly lead Malevich to absolute abstraction. The work is now considered a precious testimony to his artistic evolution and to the aesthetic revolution of the early 20th century.
