The artwork

“Black Square” (1915) is Kazimir Malevich’s most famous and revolutionary work, the manifesto of Suprematism and a symbol of the 20th-century avant-garde. The painting presents a simple black square on a white ground: a radical choice with which the artist eliminates every reference to reality, narrative and the figurative tradition. Malevich called this work the “zero of form” of art, the starting point for a new aesthetic based on pure feeling.

The power of Black Square lies not in visual complexity, but in the theoretical gesture: art must not represent the world, but reveal the essence of the creative spirit. The contrast between black and white becomes a metaphor for the infinite, the absolute and transcendence. First shown at the “0.10” exhibition in Petrograd, the work inaugurated a new era, profoundly influencing the history of abstraction. Even today, Black Square remains one of the most debated, enigmatic and revolutionary icons of modernity.
