The artwork

A historic view of a detail of Piazza del Popolo in the Rome of 1666, which Lievin Cruyl depicts with the obelisk prominent. It is a square not yet paved, where carriages race along, with townspeople and riders. It is the square that dominates the picture; the churches and palaces are further back, the square is seen from a corner, and in the sky are a few heavy clouds, but it is not raining. Three variants of this picture exist.
