An original and luminous 18th-century view of the Prisons of San Marco, by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground is the rectangular, two-storey building, with a small square in front of it, with scenes of everyday life and a carriage. The painting is lit by the setting sun. No prisoners are shown. The sky is clear, with no clouds on the horizon. The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1744.
