The work is a large full-length portrait by Anthony van Dyck, painted in 1634. It depicts Princess Henrietta of Lorraine after her adventurous escape from France, when, accused of complicity in a plot against the crown, she was forced to leave Nancy disguised as a man and found refuge in the Spanish Netherlands, where the painter portrayed her.
Van Dyck presents her in sumptuous attire, with heavy black and white fabrics that stand out against the golden drapery, while one hand rests naturally on the shoulder of the young Black page offering her a tray of flowers. The controlled elegance of the figure, the interplay of gazes, and the contrast between the princess's luxury and the page's subordinate position allude to her aristocratic dignity maintained despite exile, but also to the European high nobility's taste for surrounding themselves with "exotic" servants, often slaves, as a sign of rank.
