The artwork
Giotto di Bondone's Presentation of the Virgin at the Temple, painted between 1303 and 1305 in the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua, depicts the moment when, according to tradition, the young Mary is led by her parents Joachim and Anne to the Temple of Jerusalem to be consecrated to God. The young girl, small and determined, ascends the steps with a confident step toward the High Priest awaiting her above, a symbol of her faith and purity. At the foot of the steps, her parents observe her with emotion and reverence, while several women accompany the scene, lending it a more vibrant and human feel.
Giotto constructs the architecture of the Temple with perspective balance and solemnity, and the figures' measured gestures convey a profound spiritual intensity. The work combines narrative, realism, and sentiment, demonstrating Giotto's innovative ability to give visual form to devotion and human affection.
