The Presentation of Jesus in the Temple by Giotto di Bondone, frescoed between 1303 and 1305 in the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua, depicts the Gospel episode in which Mary and Joseph bring the Child to the Temple of Jerusalem to consecrate him to the Lord. At the centre of the scene, the aged Simeon takes Jesus in his arms with a moved gesture, recognising in him the promised Messiah. Beside him, the prophetess Anna bears witness to the miracle, while Mary and Joseph appear respectful and attentive. Giotto constructs the setting with architectural balance and depth of perspective, giving the temple a solemn monumentality.
The gentle expression of the faces and the measured gestures reveal the artist’s human and spiritual sensibility, renewing sacred painting by making the sense of devotion and family intimacy tangible. The artwork combines compositional rigour with profound religious emotion, anticipating Renaissance painting.
