The artwork
The painting titled "Portrait of the Third Wife" is a 1905 oil on canvas work by Giovanni Fattori. It is currently on display at the Giovanni Fattori Civic Museum in Livorno.
In this painting, the Macchiaiolo painter portrayed his third wife, Fanny Martinelli. Fattori married Fanny after losing his second wife, Marianna Bigazzi. The marriage between Fattori and Fanny Martinelli did not last long, as she died in 1908, a few months before Fattori himself. The portrait is signed and dated in the lower right corner. The work was exhibited at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Milan in 1906.
