The artwork
The Portrait of a Musician, painted by Leonardo da Vinci around 1490, depicts a young man in a three-quarter view, holding a sheet of music. The subject's detailed and lifelike face stands out against the other elements of the work, such as the red hat and tunic, which appear to have been added later or by another artist. The musician's gaze is directed toward something outside the viewer's field of vision, lending the scene an aura of mystery.
The portrait, exhibited at the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana in Milan, is considered a significant example of Leonardo's skill in the psychological depiction of his subjects. Although some believe the musician depicted is Franchino Gaffurio, the choirmaster of the Milan Cathedral, the man's identity remains uncertain. Furthermore, the work has been largely restored, and some art historians believe Leonardo left it unfinished.
