Portrait of Marie-Thérèse by Pablo Picasso wins you over at once with its visual force and the intense allure of the female figure. The soft forms, vivid colours and the face built in Picasso's unique language create an image full of warmth, personality and energy. It is a work that gives character to a room and speaks to those who love art that moves at first sight.
Made in the period devoted to Marie-Thérèse Walter, one of the artist's most important muses, this image expresses some of the distinctive features of Picasso's poetics: sinuous lines, essential volumes and a strong synthesis of portrait and invention. It is precisely this fusion that makes the work so recognisable and still so loved by collectors and admirers of Picasso today.
