The Portrait of Jakob Muffel is an oil painting on panel transferred to canvas by Albrecht Dürer, monogrammed and dated 1526, and held in the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin.
The artwork depicts Jakob Muffel, a prominent burgomaster of Nuremberg. The work is an example of Dürer’s mastery in portraying public figures with realism and dignity. Muffel is shown half-length, his gaze directed at the viewer, conveying authority and presence. The details of the face, hands and clothing are rendered with great precision, emphasising the social status and personality of the sitter. The neutral, dark background sets off the figure, while the soft light lends depth and naturalness.
