The artwork
The Portrait of Ginevra de' Benci is an early masterpiece by Leonardo da Vinci, created around 1474-1478. Housed in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, it is Leonardo's only painting in the Americas. The work depicts Ginevra de' Benci, a young Florentine noblewoman, depicted half-length before a natural landscape that foreshadows the master's typical sfumato technique. Her slightly turned face expresses a melancholic composure and intense psychological introspection, a sign of Leonardo's revolution in portraying the human soul.
This work marks a crucial moment in Renaissance painting, combining naturalness, harmony, and psychological depth with extraordinary modernity.
