The Portrait of Albrecht Dürer the Elder, painted by his son Albrecht Dürer around 1490, depicts the artist’s father, a goldsmith of Hungarian origin. The artwork is characterised by intense realism and profound psychological insight. The man’s face appears marked by age and work, with a serious, meditative gaze that conveys dignity and moral severity. Dürer uses a sober light to bring out the features of the face, the wrinkles and the beard, avoiding any idealisation.
The simple clothing underlines the honesty and industriousness of the sitter. The neutral background focuses attention on the inner expression, making the portrait intimate and respectful. This work is not only a filial tribute, but also a demonstration of Dürer’s extraordinary ability to portray the individual with truth and human depth.
