The Portrait of a Young Man by Masaccio is one of the earliest examples of the modern portrait in the Renaissance. The artist depicts the sitter with great restraint, focusing on psychological insight rather than idealisation. The face emerges with sculptural force thanks to the use of light and chiaroscuro, which model the features naturally and realistically. The direct, intense gaze suggests a living, concrete presence.
The absence of decorative elements accentuates the centrality of the individual, reflecting the new humanist conception of man typical of Masaccio's art.
