The artwork
The Portrait of a Warrior with His Squire, attributed to the circle of Giorgione and sometimes associated with the Venetian master himself, is a painting in oil on canvas held at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. The work depicts a warrior in armour seen from the front, his gaze steady and slightly melancholy, as he grips his sword and rests his hand on a parapet displaying items of his military equipment such as a helmet, spurs and a mace. Beside the warrior stands a squire or page, dressed in bright colours, who holds a lance and seems to converse with his lord.
The scene is bathed in a soft light that delicately models the volumes, blending figure and background. Although in the past it has been suggested that the protagonist is the famous condottiere “Gattamelata”, the attribution and identity remain uncertain and debated among art historians.
