The artwork
The Head of a Halberdier is a fragment of a painting by the Dutch artist Hieronymus Bosch. It is currently in the Prado Museum in Madrid.
It is believed to be a fragment cut from a larger painting, which may have been damaged. Bosch succeeds in conveying the dignity, strength and inner tension of the warrior through an intense gaze and a careful rendering of bodily expression. The neutral background focuses attention on the subject, while the painting technique brings out the texture of the materials, from the fabrics to the weapon itself. The work is not only a physical portrait but a reflection on the role and identity of the soldier in the social and moral context of the time.
