The artwork
In this work, on a painted surface of soft, shaded tones that blend delicately into one another, there emerge brightly coloured symbols – stars, suns and comets – rendered in brilliant red, yellow and green, typical of Joan Miró's poetic vocabulary. The composition is arranged in two main registers: from the bottom rises a black trunk that penetrates the blue field, continuing into a yellow section resembling a neck, in which one recognises the famous almond sign, Miró's emblem of femininity and generation.
A thin, branching line, enriched by a female breast decorated with polychrome motifs, links the figure to a large white form, suspended and almost cosmic. Tiny signs, red and yellow spots and symbols scattered across the surface allude to a fragmented and transfigured human body. The chromatic intensity and refinement of the symbolic language transform Portrait IV into an image of strong visual impact, enriching Miró's repertoire of female figures with a fantastical, sensual and deeply evocative variant.
