The Portrait of the Duke of Choiseul (1757) by Giovanni Paolo Pannini is a significant work by the artist: the duke, an important French diplomat and ambassador to Rome, is depicted in a solemn pose.
Born in Lorraine, the duke soon entered the service of the French monarchy and pursued a career as a diplomat. He served as ambassador to Rome and later to Vienna, positions in which he distinguished himself for his skill and refinement, earning the trust of Louis XV.
In 1758 he was appointed Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and in the following years assumed a leading role as the de facto Prime Minister of the monarchy. He directed French foreign policy in the final phase of the Seven Years’ War (1756–1763); he also promoted important domestic reforms, strengthened the army, encouraged the arts, and supported intellectual figures of the Enlightenment.
