The Portrait of the Duc de Choiseul (1757) by Giovanni Paolo Pannini is a significant work by the artist: the duke, an important French diplomat and ambassador to Rome, is depicted in a solemn pose.
Born in Lorraine, the duke entered the service of the French monarchy early and made his career as a diplomat. He was ambassador to Rome and then to Vienna, posts in which he distinguished himself by his skill and refinement, earning the trust of Louis XV.
In 1758 he was appointed Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and in the following years took on a leading role as de facto Chief Minister of the monarchy. He directed French foreign policy in the final phase of theSeven Years' War (1756-1763); he also promoted important domestic reforms, supported the army, encouraged the arts and protected intellectual figures of the Enlightenment.
